Making of Fight Club

This is my latest concept drawing, I started with it for 2 years,
with an idea of two animal robots who should fight against each other.
After I had done some sketches of these two guys I had an idea for a fighting scene!

...after two years now and having time for it I started a few days ago this picture. It takes me about 30 hours and five programm crashes...
I learned from this and saved every ten minutes ;)

This is the first time I forced my self to sit down and work out the hole details, I hope it works!
This was important to me, because I wanted to know if I could do this... So I´am study product design and u never sit down so much time on a drawing.

I used for this picture some self made brushes together with a "Wacom Art Marker", you can use it like a real marker(making heavy and thin lines) especially for the hole scratches.

So let us start...

The Scetches above are done with a smooth pencil (Polychromos Indigo Blue) I thought about the moving and function...

First I have done perspective lines to set up my pic. I would like to have a very strong perspective. this was very important for me, because of the picture mood. Second I added a room or arena, after this I had drawn the robots into it.

Sorry for this little big step, I forgot to save... :)
Here can u see that I took my pre sketches as reference. I had done this for all bots. For rendering the bots had draw only clear color surfaces. U can see it on the Robot hand! I think it is very good to have a firs very easy 3D look and your hole peace of paper does not look so empty. It was important for me to give not up...

Here u can see how I detailed the hand. The forground bot should lurk for the gorilla bot and scratch the bottom...

I added the arena walls. The light should be coming from above...

Time for flipping the picture horizonal, to become an other point of view. A fightclub should have many damages and scratches. While adding scratches it is important to take care of your lightsource, because of the "highlights".
I took for the wall surfaces a "slick" picture and adjust it to multiply. This is the only photo I took for my drawing!

On the left bot u can really good see what I mean with "color surfaces" and "easy 3D"! I had drwan the color areas, it is easy to to erase and add something. If you are doing this it is easy to pic up the diffrent colors. The walls must have scratches and breaks too... and you can see the celebrity area!

I thought about my picture mood and added some fog. It is coming out of the robot cage and climbed the walls... and it was time to easy color the gorilla.

Until this point I don´t really know if I should add some color to the pic. I decided to let it be, because I would have this detailed robot eye in focus. The render time for the gorilla was about 3-4 hours.

Here can u see the rendered robot, I had done it twice, because Photoshop crashed...
I tuned the fog a little bit and added its ground shadow.

I slept a few hours and find that the gorilla jump doesn´t look dramatic enough! So I let him jump trough some foggy light... I think it looks much better and give the picture more action :)

Oh... it happends a little bit! First thing is, I had tuned my forground bot with scars, symbols and flying aroundbottom peaces.
Second... to the right you can see a third robot who is coming out of his cage.
Third... I added some lightsources for lightning up the robots.
Last one... I started with the "VIP" area... these people are feeling save behind this very thick glass.

At this point I let the robot eye a little bit more glow, it is looking more agrassive and I finished the VIP are. I don´t whant it to much detailed, because my mainfocus are the fightbots!

YES! I ´am finished after about 30 hours of work. The last thing I had done was adding 4% blue and import my tag.

I hope u will like it and the tutorial can help u a little bit!
